La CARTA NATAL es un mapa del cielo tal y como lo vería un recién nacido desde su cuna, excepto que también incluye la mitad invisible del cosmos que quedaría por debajo del horizonte. Simbólicamente, el círculo central del mapa representa la Tierra, donde nos encontramos nosotros. A nuestro alrededor, los doce signos del zodiaco forman una banda circular a lo largo de la eclíptica, ocupando cada uno un espacio fijo de 30 grados. Dentro de este espacio se mueven los planetas, pasando, a distintas velocidades, de un signo al siguiente en circuitos ininterrumpidos. La flecha hacia la izquierda representa el Ascendente que, simultáneamente, señala el signo que corresponde a la Casa 1.
